IMD on Wednesday issued an orange alert as incessant rains continued to lash Uttarakhand where 11 people were killed in different incidents since early Tuesday.
IMD said very heavy rains are likely to occur at isolated places in three districts. “Thunderstorm accompanied with lightning and very intense to extremely intense spell of rain likely to occur at isolated places in Dehradun, Nainital and Bageshwar districts of Uttarakhand,” it said.
Two Nepalese labourers were killed when a tin shed under which they were living was buried in landslides at Dhar-Ki-Tuni area of Almora district on Tuesday. In another incident in Almora, three people including a woman were killed after an old house was damaged at Someshwar area amid heavy rains early on Tuesday. An SDRF team launched a rescue operation and removed the debris to retrieve the three persons. However, all the three were found dead. Their bodies were subsequently handed over to the district police. The deceased have been identified as Prema Devi (42), Kalpana Arya (19) and Manish Kumar (18).
Twelve year old Samrat was swept away in the fast currents of Asan river in Chandrabani area in Dehradun on Tuesday. His body was found downstream after a search operation. In a separate incident in Dehradun early Tuesday, two youths from Rajasthan were killed after they were swept away in a swollen stream in the Lower Kondli area following heavy rainfall. According to police, a Creta SUV carrying the victims was caught in the strong currents of the rain-fed stream, following which two persons were swept away. During the subsequent search operation, the bodies of Akshay (20) and Kanak Sachdev (21) both hailing from Jaipur were recovered. One girl, identified as Sahaj Baweja, was also rescued by SDRF personnel.
In yet another incident in Pauri district, a 26-year-old woman and her one-and-a-half-year-old daughter were swept away when they were crossing the swollen Kolhu river in Kotdwar area on Tuesday, police said. The deceased were identified as Jenum (26) and her daughter Afia. Their bodies were recovered from the river with the help of SDRF personnel.
In Nainital district, a female child identified as Pihu (3) was swept away in a swollen nullah at Bhimtal area on Tuesday. Her body was later found in Bhimtal lake.
These incidents occurred as several parts of Uttarakhand were lashed by heavy rains during the past 24 hours.
