People living in fear in Gopeshwar area in Chamoli district of Uttarakhand heaved a sigh of relief after a bear was captured and another found dead, forest officials said on Saturday.

A bear was caged in Pokhari area near Gopeshwar after being tranquilized by a team of forest department on Friday.

Another bear was found dead on Thursday near Gopeshwar. DFO Badrinath Sarvesh Dubey said the death of the bear could be due to fall from a tree or a hill top as the ribs were broken.

A girl had fainted at the sight of a bear on her way to school on Tuesday. The Tuesday’s incident came a day after two bears barged into a school in Pokhari, close to Gopeshwar, creating scare in the area.

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami had also spoken to school children injured in bear attacks at schools in Chamoli district.

The CM had directed the district administration and forest department officials to immediately increase patrolling in the affected areas and ensure additional robust security arrangements around schools, Anganwadis, and colonies. He clarified that all necessary and effective steps should be taken to prevent the recurrence of such incidents in the future.
