Loud explosions were heard across parts of Caracas, the capital of Venezuela, early Saturday as US strafed several areas on the orders of President Donald Trump.
According to media reports, the explosions were heard around 2 am local time (0600 GMT). At least a dozen explosions were heard, along with aircraft flying at low altitude over several neighbourhoods of the Venezuelan capital. Venezuelan defence sources said the government was assessing the damage caused by the US strikes.
Meanwhile, Venezuelan government has declared a state of emergency, calling on people to mobilise to “defeat this imperialist aggression”.
Media reports said US officials have confirmed that President Donald Trump ordered the strikes on sites inside Venezuela, including military facilities, as the administration early Saturday ratcheted up its campaign against the regime of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro.
The US military has been attacking boats in the Caribbean Sea and the eastern Pacific Ocean since early September. As of Friday, the number of known boat strikes is 35, and the number of people killed is at least 115, according to numbers announced by the Trump administration.
U.S. President Donald Trump said Saturday the United States conducted a large-scale strike in Venezuela that resulted in the capture and removal of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.
Maduro and his wife were captured and removed from the country following the operation, which was conducted in coordination with U.S. law enforcement authorities, Trump said in a statement on Truth Social. No further details were provided.
