Two persons were arrested on Wednesday after the UIttarakhand police launched a probe into the alleged murder of social media journalist Pankaj Mishra, a resident of Jakhan area of Dehradun city.

Amit Sehgal, a resident of Dehradun, and Parthosheel, a resident of Mumbai, were arrested after an FIR was registered on Wednesday in Rajpur police station for alleged murder, trespassing, and robbery in connection with the death of Mishra.

The case against Sehgal was registered based on a complaint filed by the deceased journalist’s brother, Arvind Mishra, a resident of Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh.

In the complaint, the brother in the FIR stated that on the night of December 15, at around 10 pm, Sehgal, along with some other people, came to Pankaj Mishra’s house and started assaulting him with the intention of killing him. Sehgal kicked and punched Mishra in the chest and stomach, causing blood to come out of his mouth.

After the assault, Sehgal also snatched his mobile phone. Meanwhile, when Pankaj’s wife, Lakshmi, tried to inform the police using her mobile phone, Sehgal and his accomplices snatched her phone as well, misbehaved with her, and then fled.

According to the complaint, Pankaj then informed the police about the incident using a passerby’s phone. After arriving at the scene, the police asked Mishra to get a medical examination and file a complaint, but he said that due to his injuries and fear, he would not go at night and would take action in the morning. A few hours later, at 3 am (early morning) on Tuesday, Pankaj told his wife that he was experiencing stomach pain, and as soon as he got up from the bed, he fell unconscious to the ground.

The complaint stated that his wife woke up the neighbors and informed the family using their phone, after which he was taken to Doon Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

Police said that a case has been registered against Sehgal under sections 103, 304, 333, and 352 of the BNS and an investigation has been launched.

They said that preliminary information suggests that Mishra had written a post against Sehgal on social media, which was possibly the reason for the assault.
