The Uttarakhand Medical Council has ordered Max hospital in Dehradun to pay ₹10 lakh in compensation after finding it guilty of negligence in the treatment of a patient, and has also suspended the registration of a neurosurgeon at the hospital for two months.
A five-member committee of the council, headed by Dr. Anuj Singhal, gave this decision after investigating a complaint filed by the family of a female patient who died in April 2025 at the Max Hospital.
Dr Mahesh Kuriyal, a neuro surgeon, who was part of the five-member committee which probed the matter, confirmed the development and said a top doctor from AIIMS Rishikesh was also consulted in the probe.
Bindeshwari Devi was admitted to Max Hospital on Mussoorie Diversion Road on April 4 following a head injury, but she died on April 7 during treatment. Following this, her husband, Colonel Amit Kumar Douli, filed a complaint with the council against the hospital and the doctors, alleging negligence in his wife’s treatment, which he claimed led to her death.
The investigation found the hospital guilty of medical negligence and malpractice in the treatment of the deceased. Following this, the council’s judicial committee ordered the hospital to pay ₹10 lakh as compensation to the bereaved family.
The committee primarily held Dr. Anand Mohan Thakur, a doctor in the neurosurgery department of the hospital, responsible for the medical negligence and suspended his registration with the council for two months.
The order states that the doctor is prohibited from practicing medicine in any hospital, nursing home, or medical establishment during this period and will not be able to provide his services anywhere during this time.
