One more worker of Pipalkoti project dies, toll rises to 11

One more worker, who was injured after being trapped along with 21 others in the collapsed portion of a tunnel of the Pipalkoti-Vishnugad hydel project on Alkananda river in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district, succumbed to his injuries at AIIMS Rishikesh, top officials said on Wednesday.

With the death of Rohit Pandey (20) of Bihar, who succumbed to injuries on Wednesday morning, the death toll in the disaster has risen to 11. Besides Pandey, 11 other workers were also injured.

The search operation has come to an end after the bodies of the two remaining workers, Lukas Topno of Jharkhand and Chetan Poyam, who were missing, were recovered from the 3 km long tail Race tunnel on Tuesday.

The disaster occurred at the THDC India Ltd’s 444 Mw Vishnugad-Pipalkoti hydropower project tunnel on Thursday evening, when landslides caused debris and water to enter the tunnel trapping a total of 22 workers from different states.

While seven bodies were found on Thursday, another body was found on Saturday.

THDC has announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakh each to the next of the kins of the deceased.

Modern equipment and technical resources were used to clear the debris and obstructions during 117 hour long rescue operation. Rescue personnel carefully checked even the smallest gaps and all possible locations inside the affected portion of the tunnel to recover the bodies of the missing workers.

Chamoli District Magistrate Gaurav Kumar said a magisterial inquiry has been ordered to conduct a detailed investigation into the circumstances and causes of the disaster. Necessary action will be taken in accordance with the findings of the inquiry, he said.
