India is targeting more than 100 GW of installed wind energy capacity by 2030, with annual installations expected to surpass the record 6.05 GW achieved in the financial year 2025-26, Union Minister Pralhad Joshi has said.

Inaugurating the eighth edition of Windergy India 2026 in Chennai, Joshi said the country’s wind energy sector was entering a new phase of sustained growth, backed by a strong project pipeline and supportive government policies.

India had an installed wind energy capacity of 59.20 GW as of September 30, 2026, putting it on course to achieve its 2030 target, the minister said.

“India’s wind energy sector has demonstrated strong momentum, with the highest-ever annual installation of 6.05 GW achieved in FY2026. We are confident that annual wind energy installations will surpass this record in FY2027,” Joshi said.

He said expanding wind energy capacity would strengthen India’s renewable energy sector and create opportunities for technological advancement, manufacturing and exports.

The three-day Windergy India 2026, which concluded on Oct 9, has brought together the global wind energy industry, with around 400 exhibitors from more than 20 countries and 500 delegates. Country pavilions from Denmark, Germany and Spain are among the key attractions.

Tamil Nadu Energy Minister C.T.R. Nirmal Kumar, who attended the inaugural ceremony, highlighted the state’s important role in wind energy development and its initiatives to promote the sector, including a repowering policy.

During the event, representatives of state governments were felicitated for their contributions to wind energy development through land facilitation, timely clearances and resolution of right-of-way issues.

Several international and domestic collaborations were also announced to promote technological development. These included agreements and initiatives involving the Indian Wind Turbine Manufacturers Association (IWTMA), the German wind energy association BWE, PTB and the OECD.

Two reports, titled Energy Transition in Tamil Nadu and Reimagining Contractual Mechanism for Indian Wind Sector, were released at the inaugural ceremony.

The event aims to strengthen cooperation among governments, industry, research institutions and international partners to accelerate wind energy deployment, encourage innovation and develop India’s position as a global hub for wind energy manufacturing and exports.
