The Congress high command on Monday selected Qazi Nizamuddin, the party MLA from Mangalore in Uttarakhand, as star campaigner for the coming assembly elections in Tamli Nadu.
The move is being seen as elevation of stature of Nizamuddhin in the upper echelon of the party. In the list of 40 star campaigners for Tamil Nadu, Nizamuddin, who is already incharge of party’s affairs in Delhi, is the only party leader from Uttarakhand. Among 40 star campaigners for Tamil Nadu include Rahul Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge.
Significantly, Nizamuddin’s promotion came at a time when the Uttarakhand party unit is mired in intense internal bickering with former Chief Minister Harish Rawat taking a 15 day leave from active politics.
“Heartfelt best wishes and congratulations to Congress National Secretary, Delhi In-charge, and Mangalore MLA Qazi Nizamuddin Ji on his appointment as a Star Campaigner for the party in Tamil Nadu,” the state Congress said in a statement.
However, the move to select Nizamuddin as start campaigner didn’t go down well with the state party leaders, the Congress sources said.
