A 16-year-old girl was allegedly gangraped in Salli village in Champawat district of Uttarakhand, a top police official said on Wednesday.

The leader of the opposition Yashpal Arya has claimed that the victim’s father has leveled serious allegations against the BJP Mandal Vice-President, a former village head, and a student. It is reported that the accused student and the former village head are uncle and nephew. Significantly, Arya did not disclose their names in his social media post.

Superintendent of Police (SP) Champawat Rekha Yadav said father of the girl filed a police complaint against three youths, who are absconding. Police said the trio gangraped the girl under duress.

“We have launched a severe manhunt to nab the three culprits,” said Yadav.

According to preliminary reports, the girl was found with her hands tied in a room in nearby village where she was gangraped. The girl was missing since Tuesday after she had gone to attend a marriage ceremony at Salli.

Former Chief Minister Harish Rawat has condemned the gangrape and demanded immediate arrest of the rapists.
