The Uttarakhand government has ordered a probe after two tiger cubs were killed in Shyampur forest range in Haridwar district of Uttarakhand recently.

“We have ordered a high-level inquiry,” said state forest Minister Subodh Unniyal.

The two cubs were recently found dead with their limbs severed indicating that they were apparently killed by poachers. A Van Gujjar has been arrested while two other accused were absonding.

The carcasses of the cubs were recovered during the night of May 18–19. The slain cubs were one year old—one male and one female. Significantly, a half-eaten carcass of a buffalo was also discovered at the exact spot where the tiger cubs’ bodies were found. Forest officials suspect that van gujjars might have laced the buffalo’s carcass with poison, and the cubs subsequently died after consuming the poisoned meat.
