Rains my bring relief from heat in Uttarakhand, other parts of north India

After weeks of hot spell, Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) on Wednesday said scattered to fairly widespread rain and thunderstorm with gusty winds (speed reaching 40-50 kmph) are likely to occur in Uttarakhand, Himachal and Jammu-Kashmir from May 28 to 30.

The rains may bring much-needed relief from the heatwave sweeping the north India during the past few weeks.

Scattered to fairly widespread light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorm, lightning & gusty winds (speed reaching 40-50 kmph) likely over West Uttar Pradesh during 28th-31st and East Uttar Pradesh during 27th-31st; May, it said.

Thundersquall (wind speed reaching 80-90 kmph gusting to 100 kmph) likely over Punjab, Haryana Chandigarh & Delhi, West Uttar Pradesh on 29th May

For Uttarakhand, an Orange Alert has been issued for May 29, 2026, for the districts of Uttarkashi, Dehradun, Tehri, Rudraprayag, Chamoli, Bageshwar, and Pithoragarh, indicating the possibility of isolated thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, hailstorms, and strong winds ranging in speed from 40–50 km/h. Additionally, the possibility of isolated heavy rainfall has also been forecast for the districts of Uttarkashi, Dehradun, Tehri, Rudraprayag, and Chamoli.
