15, mostly students, killed in Lucknow building fire (updating)

At least 15 people mostly students were killed when a major fire broke out at a three-storey commercial building in Lucknow on Monday, news outlets said.

The fire which apparently began due to short circuit engulfed the whole building in no time trapping students of an animation centre. Some students jumped out of the building to save their lives.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath visited the Aliganj area to see the rescue works at the building which was housing a coaching centre and asked the top officials to provide best medical facilities to the injured.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his grief over the incident and announced that an ex-gratia of Rs. 2 lakh from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF) would be given to the next of kin of each deceased. The injured would be given Rs. 50,000.
