Dehradun: A 34-year-old domestic help was arrested in Dehradun after an Instagram reel in which she flaunted a diamond necklace allegedly stolen from her former employer led police to crack a year-old theft case, police said on Friday.
The accused, identified as Vimla, was arrested from Johri Road in Dehradun following a complaint lodged by IT Park resident Nitisha Vats. Police also recovered diamond and gold jewellery worth nearly ₹10 lakh that had allegedly been stolen from the complainant’s house about a year ago.
Vats approached Rajpur police station on July 1, stating that several diamond and gold ornaments had gone missing from her home nearly a year earlier. At that time, she believed she had misplaced them and did not suspect theft, although she had mentioned the missing jewellery to friends and relatives.
The breakthrough came when one of her acquaintances recently informed her about an Instagram reel in which a woman was seen wearing a diamond necklace strikingly similar to the one she had lost. After watching the video, Vats identified the necklace as her own and recognised the woman in the reel as her former domestic help.
Based on the complaint, police registered a case and launched an investigation. Vimla was arrested, and during interrogation she allegedly confessed to stealing the jewellery while working at Vats’ residence.
Police said the accused revealed that she had noticed expensive jewellery stored in a locker inside one of the rooms and was tempted to steal it. Taking advantage of the trust reposed in her by the family, she allegedly committed the theft when she found an opportunity.
The stolen diamond and gold ornaments were recovered at her instance. The accused also admitted that she had tried to sell some of the jewellery but failed to find buyers.
Vimla has been sent to judicial custody, while further investigation into the case is underway.
