Ten women bar dancers mostly from Delhi were arrested after the Uttarakhand police unearthed an illegal casino in the spiritual town of Rishikesh in Dehradun district.

Acting on a tip-off, Uttarakhand police raided Navrang hotel in IDPL area in Rishikesh housing an illegal casino on Friday night recovering a large sum of cash and other items, and arrested 40 individuals, including 10 women bar dancers. Seven of these women were from Delhi, police said.

Meanwhile, expressing strong resentment over the illegal activities in Rishikesh, Dehradun Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Pramendra Singh Dobal suspended all 12 police personnel posted at the IDPL police-chowki including its in-charge.

The police also recovered ₹1.35 lakh, 3,356 casino coins, 26 decks of playing cards, and bottles of liquor from various brands were recovered from the scene.

The hotel has been sealed and a case has been registered against those who were arrested under Sections 3, 4, and 5 of the Gambling Act, as well as Sections 60 and 68 of the Excise Act.

The SSP said strict instructions issued to conduct continuous police checks to curb illegal activities in the district. He said the entire police staff of the IDPL police outpost—including the in-charge, Vinay Sharma—has been suspended on charges of negligence.

Dobal further stated that a departmental inquiry into the matter has also been initiated, and punitive action will be taken against anyone found guilty.
