Ajay Naudiyal Director Uttarakhand Elementary Education on Saturday was injured in a brawl with supporters of BJP MLA Umesh Sharma Kau in Dehrdaun.

Naudiyal suffered injuries around one of his eyes in the incident, which occurred in the directorate in Raipur area and was subsequently taken to the hospital.

An FIR was filed against Kau and his supporters by a group of teachers at Raipur police station.

A video of the incident has also gone viral on social media where the chairs were being hurled freely in the room of Naudiyal in presence of Kau.

Naudiyal later explained that the MLA had come seeking information regarding the renaming of a school, and when he tried to pacify the legislator that the matter was pending at the government level, Kau’s supporters became angry and began assaulting the Director.

Denying the allegations of assault, Kau alleged that supporters of Naudiyal created brawl in the room and that he was merely sitting in a chair.

Kau said that the family, who donated their land free of charge for the construction of a school, wishes to have the school named after their family elder, Padma Singh Rawat. For the name change, Kau said he was repeatedly visiting the Directorate for the past seven to eight months.

Kau said that Naudiyal had told the family that he had sent a letter to the government in this regard. However, Kau said when he personally inquired with the Secretary of Elementary Education, the official denied any such file had been received.

The MLA said that he went to the directorate for a copy of the letter which was said to have submitted to the government. However, he said that instead of handing over the letter, Naudiyal called some people to his room, after which the scuffle broke out.

Meanwhile, the main opposition Congress party alleged that an atmosphere of anarchy has prevailed in the state and that there is infighting within the BJP.  State Congress President Ganesh Godiyal said, “The officer who was beaten is very close to Education Minister Dhan Singh Rawat. And that is why there was a scuffle between the MLA and this officer. The situation within the BJP is such that people don’t like to see each other.”

Condemning the incident, Godiyal said that an impartial investigation should be conducted and an FIR should be filed against anyone found guilty, including the MLA.

Meanwhile, the BJP has sought explanations from Kau over the incident, which occurred at a crucial time when the assembly elections are just one year away.
