Autism is a spectrum disorder and affects one in 36-37 children worldwide, experts say.
With the situation turning alarming, experts have now called for setting up specialized centres in Uttarakhand and other places in India for these children on the occasion of the World Autism Awareness Day.
“The situation is definitely very alarming. We need to do a lot for these children,” said Reena Jaggi, an expert on autism.
“Parents cannot take care of such children for lifelong. There is an urgent need for setting up specialized centres for these children,” agreed Dr Rita Dhawan, a gynecologist.
But the government remains indifferent on this issue.
The Greenfield School in Dehradun has launched a noble initiative to open Bodhi inclusive care centre for children affected by autism and various other disabilities.
Dr Anil Jaggi, who is heading Society for Inclusive Development (SFID), has also stressed the need to focus on such children saying the social stigma is one big factor that is preventing these children the environment which they deserved. “The acceptance is a very big issue. Fathers and grand parents don’t accept these children very easily,” said Dr Jaggi.
Bodhi provides well-structured, integrated and personalized care and therapies that bring together a range of specialized service for these children, said Dr Jaggi.
