Heavy rainfall triggered flooding in several western parts of Jammu city on Sunday, inundating roads and disrupting normal life, particularly in low-lying areas near the Ranbir Canal.

Several videos of Jammu floods also went viral.

The sudden spell of rain led to waterlogging in residential localities badly affecting Bohri, Roop Nagar and several other areas. Rainwater entered some houses, while commuters faced difficulties navigating waterlogged roads.

“It was something like near-cloudburst in the early morning. Within two hours several places were flooded,” said Ashwani Sharma, a resident of Talab Tillo locality in the city.

Jammu West MLA Arvind Gupta described the rainfall as unexpected, saying flooding developed within about two hours and caused damage in several areas. No casualties were reported in the areas covered by his statement.

In a separate incident in Raipur Domana, a woman was swept away by a strong current after heavy rain triggered a flash flood in a local stream. Her husband survived, while the woman remained missing as police and State Disaster Response Force personnel launched a search operation. A car was also washed away by the surging water, according to local reports.

The flooding came amid a spell of unsettled weather across Jammu and Kashmir. The India Meteorological Department had forecast isolated heavy rainfall in Jammu and Kashmir and other northern states and Union Territories on Sunday.

The latest incidents have once again highlighted the vulnerability of low-lying areas and local drainage systems to intense rainfall.
