A 20-year-old woman Kohinoor was brutally beaten to death by her husband and three in-laws over demands for a Bullet motorcycle and ₹5 lakh in cash, with police claiming that the accused subsequently tried to pass off the killing as suicide.

Kohinoor was allegedly assaulted and suffocated during a domestic dispute before her body was reportedly hanged from a ceiling fan to make the death appear to be suicide, SSP Nainital Dr Manjunath TC said.

Dr Manjunath said the woman’s both collarbones were also fractured during the brutal assault.

Police have arrested her husband, Uvesh, 22; mother-in-law Nasreen, 50; brother-in-law Anas, 23; and sister-in-law Shaba, 20, all residents of the Khatari area of Ramnagar.

According to the complaint filed by Kohinoor’s father, Naseem Ahmed, at Ramnagar police station on October 18, his daughter married Uvesh on May 16 this year in accordance with Muslim customs. Despite the family providing full dowry, her in-laws allegedly continued to demand a Bullet motorcycle and ₹5 lakh in cash.

The alleged murder took place on October 16.

During the investigation, police found that disputes over dowry money and family matters had repeatedly taken place between Kohinoor and her husband. On the day of the incident, an argument between the couple reportedly escalated, drawing other family members into the confrontation.

According to the police account of the alleged crime, Kohinoor was pushed onto a cot, a piece of cloth was stuffed into her mouth, and her hands and legs were held while pressure was applied to her neck. She died during the assault, police said.

The accused allegedly attempted to make the death appear to be suicide by tying a dupatta around her neck and attempting to hang her from a ceiling fan.

A case was registered at Ramnagar police station under Section 80(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), relating to dowry death. The investigation is being conducted by the Ramnagar circle officer.

“This is a very big brutal case of murder. A young girl was murdered just for some cash and a bike,” Dr Manjunath said.
