Is Rekha Arya a modern-day Gandhari? (updating with comments from Arya’s hubby)

There is a striking irony in Uttarakhand’s Women Empowerment and Child Development Minister Rekha Arya being at the centre of a raging controversy over her husband Girdhari Lal Sahu’s alleged criminal past. A minister entrusted with protecting and empowering women is now facing questions about what she knew of the serious allegations against the man she married—and whether she chose to confront them or look the other way.

The opposition’s Gandhari analogy is hard-hitting. In the Mahabharata, Gandhari blindfolded herself; in Arya’s case, critics are asking whether she remained oblivious to allegations surrounding her husband or deliberately chose not to see what was unfolding around her.

Sahu, also known as Pappu Girdhari, is also allegedly being linked to a decades-old double murder case in Bareilly by the opposition leaders. Uttarakhand CPI-ML secretary Indresh Maikhuri has claimed that a court issued a non-bailable warrant against Sahu after he failed to appear in the case. Maikhuri has also cited allegations of land fraud and the fraudulent transplantation of Sahu’s first wife’s kidney using that of a former employee. However, legal experts say the status and outcome of each case require independent verification.

Uttarakhand Congress president Karan Mahara has also raised questions about Arya in connection with the allegations against her husband. Former Chief Minister Harish Rawat has also raised concerns about women’s safety in Uttarakhand, pointing to the irony of a Women Empowerment Minister who herself says she feels unsafe.

But the questions go beyond Sahu’s alleged criminal record. The couple reportedly married in 2004, and the issue of Sahu’s earlier marriage has now come under public scrutiny. How much did Arya know about his personal circumstances and the allegations against him during their years together? If she knew of credible evidence relating to serious offences, including murder, did she ever bring it to the attention of law enforcement agencies? These questions deserve answers, although her knowledge or complicity cannot be presumed merely because she is his wife.

Arya’s repeated emotional outbursts have added another dimension to the controversy. Critics question whether her public displays of distress risk shifting attention from the allegations surrounding her husband to her own predicament. Her distress may be genuine, but it cannot, by itself, settle questions about what she knew or when she learnt it.

The issue cannot be reduced to a domestic dispute or resolved through displays of emotion. Nor can Arya automatically be held responsible for alleged offences committed by her husband. The real issue is whether she knew about credible allegations of serious criminal conduct and, if so, what she did with that knowledge.

The BJP leadership, too, faces uncomfortable questions. The party has repeatedly invoked its commitment to zero tolerance towards crime and corruption. If serious allegations involving the husband of a serving minister were already in the public domain, what steps did the party take to examine the matter?

For a minister responsible for women’s empowerment, the Gandhari comparison carries a particular political sting. But the decisive questions are factual: what did Arya know, when did she know it, and how did she respond? Neither tears nor political accusations can substitute for answers, and the law must independently establish the facts.

Meanwhile in a new video that has gone viral, Sahu, husband of Rekha Arya, has alleged that his wife has amassed wealth worth ₹210 crore through corruption. Sahu also claimed that he would soon expose further details.
