All the 19 workers were rescued from a tunnel of NHPC’s 280 Mw Dhauliganga hydel project at Alagard area in Pithoragarh district of Uttarakhand on Sunday following heavy landslides.

The landsides at Alagard were triggered by the heavy rains that had been pounding the area in the past few days, officials said.

District Magistrate Pithoragarh Vinod Goswami said in the first phase eight workers were brought out of the tunnel after a rescue operation was launched by the district authorities with the support of SDRF.

Later rest of the 11 workers were also brought out of the tunnel. “We have removed the debris from the emergency shaft of the tunnel following which all the workers were rescued,” said Goswami.

Dhauliganga Power Station (4×70 MW) is a run of the river project to harness the hydro power potential of Dhauliganga river. The Power Station was commissioned in the year 2005.
