Rescuers on Tuesday found the bodies of two remaining workers from the collapsed portion of a tunnel of the Pipalkoti-Vishnugad hydel project on Alkananda river in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district, top officials said.
With this, the search operation also came to an end after the bodies of both Lukas Topno of Jharkhand and Chetan Poyam, who were missing, were recovered from the 3 km long tail Race tunnel.
The disaster occurred at the THDC India Ltd’s 444 Mw Vishnugad-Pipalkoti hydropower project tunnel on Thursday evening, when landslides caused debris and water to enter the tunnel trapping a total of 22 workers from different states.
While seven bodies were found on Thursday, another body was found on Saturday. A total of ten workers were killed in the disaster.
Twelve workers were also injured in the disaster. THDC has announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakh each to the next of the kins of the deceased.
Modern equipment and technical resources were used to clear the debris and obstructions during the five day long rescue operation. Rescue personnel carefully checked even the smallest gaps and all possible locations inside the affected portion of the tunnel to recover the bodies of the missing workers.
Chamoli District Magistrate Gaurav Kumar said a magisterial inquiry has been ordered to conduct a detailed investigation into the circumstances and causes of the disaster. Necessary action will be taken in accordance with the findings of the inquiry, he said.
