Koolagadh bridge damaged by boulders amid heavy rains in Uttarakhand

Heavy rains continued to disrupt road connectivity in Uttarakhand on Wednesday, with landslides and boulders damaging the Koolagadh bridge on the Dharchula-Tawaghat road in Pithoragarh district.

The bridge, located on the BRO-maintained motor road, was damaged after stones and boulders fell onto the structure amid the ongoing spell of heavy rainfall in the region.

The damage has affected movement along an important route connecting Dharchula with Tawaghat and further areas of the border region.

The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has initiated work to restore connectivity. Officials said a diversion route is being constructed near the damaged bridge and is expected to be completed shortly.

The latest incident comes as several parts of Uttarakhand continue to witness heavy rainfall, triggering landslides, falling boulders and damage to roads and bridges. Hilly districts, particularly those bordering China, remain vulnerable to road blockages and sudden disruption of connectivity during intense spells of rain.

Authorities have advised commuters and residents to exercise caution while travelling through vulnerable stretches, as fresh rainfall may trigger further landslides and rockfalls.

The BRO and local administration are monitoring the affected route and restoration efforts are underway on a priority basis. Four people were killed in two different rain-related incidents in Uttarakhand on Tuesday.
