A week-long war of words between yoga guru Ramdev and BJP MP Kangana Ranaut appears to have ended on a conciliatory note, with Raksha Bandhan providing the unlikely backdrop for a public truce.
Ramdev reached out first, sending sweets and a gift to Kangana and announcing that he had decided to bury the hatchet. He also said he would personally call the actor-turned-politician to extend his Raksha Bandhan greetings.
“I am sending this gift and these sweets to our sister, Kangana Ranaut, by post,” Ramdev said, stressing that disagreements should be settled through dialogue rather than hostility.
Taking the message further, he suggested that political rivals should also embrace the spirit of the festival.
“I would say that ruling and Opposition parties should tie rakhis,” he said, arguing that such a gesture could send a strong message against discrimination and hostility in society.
The bitter exchange between the two began after Ramdev criticised Kangana’s description of Gen Z protesters as the “gutter generation” during a television event. He questioned her qualifications and choices and said her remarks were inappropriate.
Kangana hit back sharply on social media, referring to the Supreme Court’s censure of Ramdev and accusing him of crossing the limits of decency.
She told the yoga guru not to comment on her character and said his remarks were based on rumours and assumptions. She later accused him of crossing a “boundary of decency”.
Ramdev responded without escalating the confrontation, saying people were aware of his contribution to the country and that he did not wish to make further remarks about someone of Kangana’s stature.
The controversy, however, appeared to be heading towards an end when Ramdev chose Raksha Bandhan to extend an olive branch.
Kangana reciprocated, referring to Ramdev as her “elder brother” and accepting his gesture.
“Festivals are meant to forget mistakes,” she said in an Instagram story, adding that Ramdev was right in saying that conversation should replace arguments.
With Kangana accepting his gift and sweets and both sides signalling a willingness to move on, the unusually public feud now appears to have been put to rest—at least for the moment.
