Amid the devastation caused by the massive flash floods in Nepal, one green-painted house has emerged as an unlikely symbol of survival—and social media users are now jokingly wondering what went into its foundation that allowed it to withstand the fury of the floodwaters.
Videos of the house surrounded by powerful currents went viral, showing people apparently trapped inside as floodwaters raged around the structure. With the building seemingly cut off from the outside world, the images captured the frightening force of the disaster.
But after the floods when the waters receded finally, a second video brought a dramatic twist. The people who had taken shelter inside the green house appeared to have survived, while one woman was seen waving a piece of cloth, apparently signalling for help.
The house’s survival quickly became a talking point online. While much of the discussion has centred on the fate of those inside, social media users have also been left wondering about the strength of the building itself. “Even the brutal wrath of nature which destroyed everything in its path couldn’t shake it’s foundation,” an X user.
In a tongue-in-cheek reaction to the images, some asked what kind of cement—or what kind of foundation—had been used to build the house that enabled it to remain standing while floodwaters and debris swept through the surrounding area.
The viral reaction has turned the otherwise ordinary-looking green house into one of the most striking images to emerge from the Nepal disaster.
The floods and debris flows have caused widespread destruction across parts of Nepal, damaging roads, bridges and buildings and cutting off several areas.
As the death toll in the Nepal floods rose sharply, the green house has captured the imagination of social media users—a lone structure standing amid a torrent, leaving many to wonder whether its foundation was simply extraordinarily strong or whether it was just in the right place when nature unleashed its fury.
