The Congress on Wednesday won the chairperson posts in both Kichha and Siraulikalan Nagar Palika Parishads in Udham Singh Nagar district, prompting Uttarakhand party president Ganesh Godiyal to claim that the results had sent a clear message ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections.
“2027 se pehle janta ka saaf sandesh, aa rahi hai Congress ki sarkar” (A clear message from the people before 2027 — a Congress government is coming), Godiyal said in a Facebook post after the results.
The results came after voting was held on September 22 and the counting was delayed following legal proceedings. The counting was conducted on Wednesday after the Supreme Court cleared the way for declaration of the results.
In Siraulikalan, Congress candidate Rashida Begum defeated independent candidate Farheen Jahan by around 1,773 votes. Rashida secured 5,434 votes against Farheen’s 3,661. Congress also won all four ward-member seats in the newly constituted municipality.
In Kichha, Congress candidate Rajesh Pratap Singh defeated the BJP candidate, giving the opposition party control of the municipality. The contest had assumed added political significance as Kichha is represented by Congress MLA Tilak Raj Behar.
Former chief minister Harish Rawat, also welcomed the Congress victory. Earlier, he had described the Kichha contest as significant for the party’s prospects in the 2027 Assembly elections.
