An elderly couple in Panipat area in in the northern Indian state of Haryana allegedly committed suicide after suffering continuous mental harassment by daughter in law.
Rajesh and Suman, who were residing in Nara village, were in depression for a long time due to alleged harassment by their daughter-in-law and her family members.
Driven to desperation, the couple allegedly committed suicide by ingesting a poisonous substance on Saturday afternoon. Both were admitted to the District Civil Hospital in critical condition but doctors couldn’t save their lives.
Later family members alleged that frequent arguments used to erupt between the couple and their daughter-in-law Sneha, a resident of Delhi, primarily over issues related to her attire and remaining busy on mobile.
The deceased couple’s son Ashish had entered into a love marriage in January 2025 with Sneha, a resident of Delhi. Since very beginning, the daughter-in-law’s conduct toward her in-laws was rude.
Disputes frequently arose regarding her choice of clothing and her active presence on mobile. Few days ago, an altercation had taken place between the couple and Sneha.
On Saturday afternoon, Rajesh called his brother to inform him that he and his wife had consumed a poisonous substance. Following this, both were admitted to the hospital, where Suman passed away during treatment. Rajesh was subsequently transferred to PGI Rohtak, where he, too, succumbed on Sunday.
The police is investigating the matter.
