Supporting a group of unemployed youths, Congress leader Jyoti Rautela on Tuesday attempted self-immolation by dousing petrol at a water tower in Dehradun.
However, she remained unharmed after some people snatched the bottle and prevented her from taking drastic step.
Rautela’s self-immolation attempt came at Parade Ground in Dehradun where the unemployed nursing professionals are holding dharna demanding government jobs during the past few days.
A group of youths on Monday climbed the water tower to mount their protest. Uttarakhand women Congress President Jyoti Rautela also joined them at the water tower to show her solidarity.
Later, sharing a video of the incident from Rautela’s social media account, ‘Team Jyoti Rautela’ wrote that she had taken this drastic step in light of the BJP government’s inaction and arrogance. The post stated: “For the past 40 hours, not a single government representative has come here to meet us. The Chief Minister (Pushkar Singh Dhami) is traveling to Assam, yet he has no time to meet the youth of his own state.”
Unemployed nursing professionals from across the state, rallying under the banner of the ‘Nursing Ekta Manch’ (Nursing Unity Forum), have been observing a fast unto death for the past three weeks, demanding the initiation of a year-wise recruitment process in accordance with the Indian Public Health Standards (IPHS). To intensify their agitation, their representatives climbed atop the water tank at the Parade Ground on Monday, and Rautela subsequently joined them to express her solidarity.
