A 22-year-old labourer was killed and four others were injured after a speeding city bus lost control and crushed them on a footpath in Dehradun’s Patel Nagar area on Tuesday, police said.

The accident occurred near Lal Pul at around 11 a.m. when the bus, which was heading towards ISBT, veered off the road and struck a group of labourers sitting on the footpath.

According to police, the injured workers were rushed to the nearby Mahant Indiresh Hospital for treatment, where one of them succumbed to his injuries. The deceased was identified as Ahad (22) of Rajiv Nagar Dehradun.

The injured have been identified as Ratan Kumar (45) of Ballia in Uttar Pradesh, Sanjeet (32) Muzaffarpur, Bihar; Sukhraj Sahni (59) Darbhanga, Bihar; and Man Singh.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the driver may have suffered a medical emergency, causing him to lose control of the vehicle.

Patel Nagar police station in-charge Vinod Gusain said the driver, Arjun (28), a resident of Rajpur Road, told investigators that he felt dizzy moments before the accident.

“During questioning, the driver claimed that he experienced dizziness, due to which the vehicle climbed onto the footpath,” Gusain said.

Police said Arjun’s health deteriorated after the incident and he was admitted to the Coronation District Hospital for medical examination and treatment.

Authorities have launched an investigation into the accident and are examining all circumstances surrounding the incident. Further action will be taken based on the findings of the inquiry, police said.

The accident has once again highlighted concerns about road safety and the vulnerability of daily wage labourers and pedestrians who often sit or wait for work along busy roadsides in the city.
