Ram temple donation row: The ball’s in CM Yogi’s court

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath is expected to take a decision after the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing alleged irregularities in donations and offerings at the Ram Temple in Ayodhya has submitted its preliminary report, marking a significant development in a controversy that has attracted nationwide attention.

News outlets said the report was handed over to the state government on Tuesday after days of investigation into allegations of misappropriation of cash donations, gold and silver offerings, and lapses in financial management at the temple. The SIT was formed on June 13 following complaints regarding the handling of devotees’ contributions at the temple.

The report has flagged several discrepancies in the management of donations and valuables received at the temple, some media reports claimed. These include alleged shortcomings in cash handling procedures, incomplete records relating to precious metal offerings, and concerns regarding procurement and administrative practices.

The SIT has reportedly recommended the registration of a First Information Report (FIR) against individuals found prima facie responsible for the irregularities. It has also suggested structural reforms to strengthen transparency and accountability in the management of temple donations. Some reports indicate that the investigators have proposed a revamp of the administrative framework of the temple trust to prevent future lapses.

The probe had intensified in recent days, with investigators directing certain trust and temple functionaries not to leave Ayodhya while inquiries were underway. This move was seen as an indication that the investigation had entered a crucial phase.

While the state government has acknowledged receiving the report, officials have not yet disclosed its complete contents. The recommendations are expected to be examined before any further legal or administrative action is initiated.

The controversy has also sparked political debate. Opposition leaders have demanded a transparent and time-bound investigation, while independent observers argue that accountability in the management of public donations is essential regardless of the institution involved.

The government is now expected to decide on the next course of action based on the SIT’s findings, with public attention focused on whether criminal proceedings and institutional reforms will follow.
