Dehradun: Three days after Srishti Kandari, a government school teacher, allegedly died by suicide after accusing her in-laws of harassment through a purported video message, Uttarakhand Police on Saturday arrested her husband and sister-in law.
“We have arrested husband Saurabh Khatri (36) and sister-in law Surabhi Khatri (37) in connection with the dowry death of Srishti Kandari,” said SSP Dehradun, Pramendra Singh Dobal.
Earlier on Friday, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has ordered CB-CID probe into the case.
The case has sparked widespread outrage after a video, purportedly recorded by 30-year-old Srishti Kandari before her death, surfaced on social media. In the video, she is seen recounting the ordeal she allegedly endured during her six-month marriage to Saurabh Khatri, an employee of the Uttarakhand Secretariat.
“Sorry Mommy… I’m leaving. I’ve been enduring this pain for six months now and I can’t bear it anymore. These people can never change. Every day they keep calling me manhoos (someone who brings ill luck),” Srishti said in the purported video, which has since gone viral.
In the video, she said she was driven to take the extreme step because she could no longer cope with the mental anguish allegedly caused by harassment from her in-laws.
According to police, Srishti allegedly died by suicide after hanging herself from a ceiling fan at her in-laws’ residence in the Doiwala area of Dehradun on Wednesday. She was rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared her dead.
Police have registered a case of dowry harassment against her husband, Saurabh Khatri, his mother and his sister in connection with her suspicious death.
The FIR was lodged at Doiwala Police Station in Dehradun under Section 80(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) on a complaint filed by the deceased’s mother, police said.
Srishti was employed as a teacher at a government school in Tehri district. She married Saurabh Khatri in November last year.
In her complaint, Srishti’s mother alleged that her daughter had been subjected to continuous mental and physical harassment after marriage over dowry demands and other issues. She also alleged that Srishti was repeatedly insulted and called “manhoos” by her in-laws.
The complainant further accused her daughter’s husband and his family of being responsible for her death and alleged that they did not inform her about Srishti’s death on July 29.
