The death of noted psychiatrist Dr Hemika Agarwal, who allegedly died by suicide after falling from her apartment in Ghaziabad, has triggered renewed discussions on mental health after one of her old social media videos went viral.
Media reports said the 40-year-old psychiatrist allegedly jumped from the fifth floor of her apartment in Raj Nagar Extension on Sunday evening. She was rushed to a nearby hospital where doctors declared her dead. Officials said an investigation is underway and no suicide note has been recovered so far. Initial inquiries indicated that she had reportedly been battling depression, though police are examining all aspects of the case.
Dr Agarwal, a well-known psychiatrist in Ghaziabad and Noida, had built a significant following on social media by sharing videos on mental health, stress management and emotional well-being.
Following news of her death, one of her earlier videos has resurfaced and is being widely shared online. In the video, Dr Agarwal spoke about the growing risk of suicide in urban areas, saying that cities often have weaker social integration than villages. According to her, people in villages generally enjoy stronger family and community support systems, whereas urban residents are more likely to experience loneliness, social isolation and emotional distress despite living in densely populated environments.
The tragic irony of the psychiatrist’s own death has struck many of her followers, who have described her observations as both insightful and deeply poignant. Mental health professionals have also said the incident serves as a reminder that mental illnesses can affect anyone, including those trained to diagnose and treat them.
Police said the exact circumstances leading to Dr Agarwal’s death would be established only after completion of the investigation and post-mortem examination. Meanwhile, her death has reignited conversations on the importance of seeking timely mental health support and strengthening community and family connections.
