Two young sisters, aged three and seven, hailing from Bihar died after being trapped inside a ramp over a swollen drain in Dehradun’s Clement Town area on Thursday, police said.
The three-year-old girl Sonakshi got trapped beneath a ramp built over the drain which was overflowing following heavy rains in Nai Basti area under Clement Town police station. Her seven-year-old sister Lakshmi entered the drain in an attempt to rescue her but also got trapped under the ramp. But by the time local residents managed to pull both the girls out of the ramp, they have already died.
Police said the girls’ mother, Reena Kumari, told investigators that the family hails from Khagaria district in Bihar and lives in Dehradun in a rented accommodation, where both she and her husband work as daily wage labourers.
The girls’ father had travelled to Bihar and has been informed about the tragedy, police added.
