After two days of torrential rains, Ganga and its swollen tributaries in Uttarakhand on Friday began receding but were still flowing close to danger level.
Ganga and its major tributaries — Mandakini, Alaknanda which rose above the danger level on Thursday began receding this morning. Mandakini and Alaknanda, two key tributaries of Ganga, were flowing 1-2 meter below the danger level at Haridwar, Rishikesh, Rudraprayag, Devprayag and several other places, the Central Water Commission said. The water level in these rivers was receding in the morning, it said.
Earlier, the IMD issued yellow alert of heavy rains at isolated places in Uttarkashi, Dehradun, Tehri, Rudraprayag and Bageshwar districts of Uttarakhand. Thunderstorm accompanied with lightning likely to occur at isolated places in Haridwar district also, it said.
The IMD said fairly widespread to widespread rainfall likely to continue in Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand during 6th-12th August.
