An earthquake of 4.2-4.3 magnitude hit Barkot area of Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand early on Monday, geologists said.

However, there was no loss of life or property due to the tremor which hit around 1.21 AM early morning. Many people were shaken awake and ran out of their houses in panic.

While USGS said the epicentre of the quake was at Barkot area in Uttarkashi district, the National Centre for Seismology said the location was Uttarkashi with a depth of 10 km.

The 1991 Uttarkashi earthquake, which struck on October 20, measured around 6.8 magnitude and caused widespread destruction in Uttarkashi, Tehri and Chamoli districts. Official estimates recorded 768 deaths and more than 5,000 injuries, with thousands of houses damaged.
