Air India flight diverted to Jaipur after hijack alert; probe suggests false alarm

An Air India flight from Frankfurt to Delhi made an emergency landing at Jaipur International Airport on Wednesday morning after a suspected hijack alert triggered a major security response. The alert was subsequently found to be false, and an investigation was launched to establish how it was triggered.

Flight AI-2030, operated by a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, landed safely at around 9.35 am. The aircraft was carrying 293 passengers and 13 crew members, all of whom were reported safe.

The aircraft was moved to an isolation bay, where personnel from security agencies, including the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), police and bomb disposal teams, carried out checks on the aircraft and baggage. Passengers were deboarded and taken to the terminal for security screening.

Preliminary reports indicated that the aircraft had transmitted Squawk Code 7500 while flying through the Mumbai Flight Information Region. The internationally recognised aviation code signals possible unlawful interference with an aircraft, including a hijacking.

Initial indications suggested that the alert might have been activated inadvertently by the pilot. However, the precise circumstances were being investigated, and the suspected hijacking was not confirmed.

In a statement, Air India said the aircraft and crew had been cleared by the relevant security agencies. All passengers underwent security checks and subsequently reboarded the aircraft for the onward journey to Delhi.

The airline apologised for the inconvenience caused by the diversion, reiterating that passenger and crew safety remained its highest priority.
