Renowned singer Arijit Singh on Tuesday surprised his fans by announcing his retirement from playback singing.
His announcement on social media drew an emotional curtain on one of Hindi cinema’s most defining vocal journeys of the past 15 years that includes his famous songs from 2016 Bollywood hit “ae dil hai mushkil”.
In a note shared on Instagram, Arijit thanked listeners for their unwavering. “I am not gonna be taking any new assignments as a playback vocalist from now on. I am calling it off. It was a wonderful journey,” he wrote.
A leading figure in contemporary Hindi film music, Singh is the recipient of several accolades including two National Film Awards and eight Filmfare Awards. He was conferred the Padma Shri in 2025.
Singh began his career when he participated in the reality show Fame Gurukul in 2005. He made his Hindi cinema debut in 2011 with the song “Phir Mohabbat” for the film Murder 2. He received wider recognition with the release of “Tum Hi Ho” from Aashiqui 2 in 2013, which earned him his first Filmfare Award for Best Male Playback Singer.
He won the National Film Award for Best Male Playback Singer twice for the songs “Binte Dil” from Padmaavat (2018) and “Kesariya” from Brahmāstra: Part One – Shiva (2022).
