In less than 24 hours, the Uttarakhand police early Thursday nabbed the two assailants who gunned down a prominent businessman in Tibeti Market in Dehradun city in Uttarakhand in the broad daylight after a brief encounter. The assailants have been identified as Pankaj Rana and Rajiv Rana alias Raju who are real brothers. The motive is still unclear, police said.

In the shocking incident, Arjun Sharma (42) the owner of the Amarjeet Gas Agency at GMS Road Dehradun was killed on Wednesday morning at Tibeti Market where he was standing near his car by two scooter-borne gunmen in what appeared to be a money transaction dispute within the family and close friends.

Following the strict instructions of Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, the police nabbed the two accused at Ladpur area after a brief encounter. Both the accused received bullets in their legs and feet following which they were rushed to a hospital for medical treatment.

SSP Dehradun Ajai Singh immediately visited the hospital where both the accused admitted that they were involved in the killing of Sharma.

“Two country-made pistols and a scooter were recovered from the criminals,” a police statement said. “During interrogation, the criminals confessed that they committed the murder in front of Tibeti Market,” the statement said. The interrogations are continuing, it said.

After Sharma received a gunshot at around 10:30 AM in front of a temple in the Tibeti Market, he was rushed to a hospital where he succumbed to bullet wounds. Sharma had gone to the sports complex near Tibeti Market close to Parade Ground to play tennis, police said. After the murder, the assailants escaped on the scooter.

Sharma’s wife Abhilasha later filed an FIR alleging that her husband was having a legal dispute with his mother Bina Sharma, who was made an accused in the murder case. In addition to this, Abhilasha also named Dr Ajay Khanna of S K Memorial Hospital, Vinod Uniyal and Sangita Uniyal in the murder case for having monetary disputes with her husband and family members. A person close to the family also alleged that Sharma was having an old dispute with the accused over a transaction of Rs 40-42 crore.
