Raja Bandhu was a young IT professional in Delhi. Just like other youngsters, Bandhu was also once dreaming about a flourishing career in a top multinational company. But all his dreams were shattered when he got no suitable job anywhere. Slowly he became depressed.

Within months, he renounced the world completely to become a sadhu. He moved to Haridwar and Rishikesh where he ended up becoming a roadside beggar.

What will happen to all those people like Bandhu who voluntarily become sadhus to escape the hardships of the world? Will they be also arrested under the operation Kalnemi launched by the Uttarakhand government? Top police officials however said the police only arrest people who are fraudsters after careful investigations.

After the operation Kalnemi was launched by the Uttarakhand government during the Kanwar yatra, the police in Dehradun and Haridwar has so far arrested 61 people including a Bangladeshi who allegedly duped people masquerading as sadhus.

Under the operation Kalnemi, the police formed several teams and has been conducting searches at various places, top police officials said.

Nearly 17 fake sadhus were arrested from the holy town of Rishikesh alone since yesterday, police said.

A Bangladeshi was arrested in Sahaspur area where he was living like a sadhu and duping people. During further investigations it was revealed that his real name was Rukan Rakam and came from Tangail district near Dhaka in Bangladesh. It was found that Rakam had reached Dehradun 6-7 months ago and was trying to cheat people by posing as sadhu.  “We have arrested Rakam after careful investigations,” said a police official of Sahaspur police station.

SSP Dehradun Ajai Singh said that 23 more people were arrested on Saturday from various places in Dehradun district who were also duping people by posing as sadhus. Further investigations are on, he said. A total of 38 fake sadhus were arrested from Dehradun and Haridwar on Friday.

The SSP said complaints were being received about imposters who without any religious knowledge were duping people, especially women and the elderly people. They used to scare and put immoral pressure on the gullible people.

Singh said that these imposters become active during the Char Dham and Kanwar Yatras in the state.

On the other hand, SSP Udhamsingh Nagar Manikant Mishra said a total of 66 suspected fake sadhus were taken into custody from different parts of the district. “These are 66 suspected pir-fakirs who were taken into custody in Udhamsingh Nagar district as they were found to be involved in criminal activities and were duping people by exploiting them physically, mentally or financially,” Mishra said.

Kalnemi was a demon in the epic Ramayana who was sent by Ravana to stop Lord Hanuman to bring Sanjiwani for the injured Laxman. In the ensuing fight, Kalnemi, who was impersonating as sadhu, was killed by Lord Hanuman after his true identity was revealed.
