Badminton legend Carolina Marin on Thursday announced her retirement leaving a legacy as one of the all-time greats.
Marin, an Olympic gold medalist and three-time world champion, announced her retirement due to a persistent knee injury. The 32-year-old Spaniard ends a glittering career that includes an Olympic gold medal in Rio-2016 and three World Championship titles.
In a video message on her social media accounts titled “My journey ends here”, Marin explained that the recurring injury forced her to prioritise her long-term health over a final appearance on court. She confirmed she will not compete in the upcoming European Championships in Huelva.
Marin was remembered especially by Indians for defeating P V Sindhu in Rio Olympics final in three sets to win her first gold medal.
