The Chardham yatra which was repeatedly disrupted following a series of disasters in Uttarakhand in August this year is slowly coming back on track despite continuing inclement weather conditions in the hill state.

An official report said nearly 13353 pilgrims visited four sacred Hindu shrines which are collectively known as Chardham as well as Hemkund Sahib till 7 PM on Friday with Badrinath recording 3743 pilgrims, Kedarnath 1352, Gangotri 1352, and Yamunotri 846.

Since the August 5 Dharali disaster, the Chardham yatra took downward trend due to heavy flash floods and landslides that caused big trail of death and destruction in the hill state particularly in the Garhwal region. After Dharali, Syanachatti, Tharali and many more disasters struck the hill state in a short span of 20 days.

Significantly, 41.61 lakh pilgrims had visited the Chardham shrines till August 4. Experts said this figure is not bad as compared to last year’s figure where the total footfall was 50 lakh during the entire season.

There is also a significant improvement from the August 4 figure when nearly 8100 pilgrims had undertaken the pilgrimage. But in the first week four days of September, the chardham yatra remained suspended for four days. After September 5, the pilgrimage started picking up momentum in a slow manner.

On September 10, nearly 8000 pilgrims visited these shrines. “We are expecting the pilgrimage to pick up momentum further in October,” a tourism official said.
