At least 30 people were killed and many others trapped in heavy landslides in Mata Vaishno Devi area on Tuesday as torrential rains continued to wreak havoc in Jammu region with most of the major rivers including Chenab and Tawi flowing above the danger level.
Elsewhere in Jammu region, four people were killed and ten injured in cloudbursts in Doda region.
Top police officials in Reasi confirmed the death of 30 people in Vaishno Devi area as calamitous rains triggered heavy landslides on Trikuta hills on Tuesday afternoon near Adhkawari area. The rescue and relief operations by army, SDRF and NDRF were going on to look for survivors and retrieve bodies. The yatra has been suspended till further orders, officials said.
In Doda, cloudbursts struck Bhalesa and other areas as flashfloods killed four people and injured ten others. Some houses were also damaged in the floods.
All major rivers like Chenab and Tawi in Jammu were flowing above the danger level. Ravi was also in spate.
In Jammu, the river Tawi was flowing above the danger level almost touching most of the bridges linking old city with Gandhi Nagar and adjoining areas. A portion of the fourth Tawi bridge was also damaged in the floods.
In Akhnoor, Chenab was also in spate flowing 4-5 feet above the danger level. “The cloudburst in Doda has brought more water in Chenab,” said Vikas Jain, a native of Jammu city.
Most of the highways and vital roads in Jammu were closed in view of the flash floods and heavy damages to roads and bridges. “The life is totally standstill in Jammu in the past two days,” said Rakesh Sharma, a health department official.
Jammu broke the record of past 99 years as it recorded 248 mm rain till 5.30 pm. On August 5, 1926, Jammu had recorded 228.6 mm rainfall.
