Congress on Thursday scored a stunning victory in Dehradun when its candidate Sukhvinder Kaur became the new chairperson of the district zila panchayat defeating Madhu Chauhan by ten votes.

Chauhan, wife of BJP MLA Munna Singh Chauhan, was the chairperson of Dehradun zila panchayat for the last 10 years.

“This is big victory for our party and huge embarrassment for BJP. This is also the beginning of the Congress party’s new rise in Uttarakhand,” said Suryakant Dhasmana, vice-president of the state Congress.

The post of the vice-chairman of the Dehradun Zila Panchayat also went to Congress when Abhishek Singh, son of former state Congress chief Pritam Singh, managed to score victory by 10 votes.

Interestingly, BJP has recently claimed big victory in the recent panchayat elections in Uttarakhand.
