The danger from two temporary lakes formed on Yamuna and Bhagirathi rivers in the northern Indian state of Uttarakhand is still persisting on Saturday even as the authorities claimed that the water level has receded considerably in the two aeras after the channelizing efforts.
In Syanachatti area in Uttarkashi district, the water level of Yamuna lake has receded by 6 feet below the Yamuna bridge (total 12 feet), said a latest report of the state emergency operation centre. The temporary lake was formed on Yamuna in Syanachatti on Thursday when a sudden gush of floods and debris from Kupdaagad stream struck the area. However, there was no loss of life in the flash floods, police said.
Over 300 people from the low-lying areas of Syanachatti have been evacuated so far.
Teams of State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Police, Fire Service, Irrigation Department, Revenue Department including the Sub-Divisional Magistrate of Barkot are keeping close watch on the situation.
A large number of hotels and houses were marooned and a bridge was submerged in Yamuna waters.
The people have been warned not to venture near the Yamuna river and stay in safer places, police said.
After the Aug 5 Dharali disaster, a temporary lake has been formed on Bhagirathi river in Harshil area of Uttarkashi district which is also posing threat to low-lying areas.
As the Bhagirarthi river is in spate, efforts are on to open the lake by digging channels with the help of the specialized teams of Uttarakhand Jal Vidyut Nigam (UJVN) and the state Irrigation Department. Personnel of SDRF are also involved. District Magistrate Uttarakashi Prashant Arya is also closely monitoring the situation.
Meanwhile, residents of Syanachatti held protests demonstrations inside the temporary lake asking the government to take all measures to open the lake.
