Despite scoring five centuries by its batters, India lost the first Test in Leeds to England by five wickets on Tuesday. With this England took 1-0 lead in the five test match series.
Chasing 371, England managed to achieve the target losing only five wickets with Joe Root and Jamie Smith remaining unbeaten on 53 and 44 respectively. Smith scored a big six to seal the victory.
Earlier in the day, Shardul Thakur dragged India back in the Test by claiming two wickets in two balls. But soon, English batters managed to take their side to victory.
Starting the day on 21-0, England’s opener Ben Duckett scored a magnificent century and put up a valuable 188 runs partnership with Zak Crawkey who made 65. Duckett was finally out at 149 runs.
It was sad to see India losing the Test match especially when its batters had scored five centuries in the match with Rishabh Pant making two centuries. But Indian bowlers could not show their strength despite Jasprit Bumrah’s five wicket haul in first inning. Bumrah remained wicket-less in the second inning.
It was also sad day for Shubman Gill who earned a dubious distinction of losing a Test match which he captained for the first time.
