The mortal remains of former state Cabinet Minister Diwakar Bhatt, who was a founding member of the Uttarakhand Kranti Dal (UKD), were consigned to flames in Haridwar on Wednesday.
Bhatt’s son lit the pyre as scores of people gathered to pay their last tributes.
Bhatt died in his Haridwar home on Tuesday following a prolonged illness. Bhatt (82) was under medical treatment in a private hospital in Dehradun during the past one month. He was discharged from the hospital in the morning but died at his home in Haridwar in the evening.
Bhatt who was former President of UKD, was a member of the state Legislative Assembly from the Devprayag constituency from 2007-2012. He many times also contested assembly election unsuccessfully. He served as Revenue Minister in the BJP government between 2007-12.
Bhatt popularly known as Field Marshall has played a prominent role in Uttarakhand Statehood Movement.
Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami condoled the death of Bhatt and in his condolence message, said the news of the demise of Bhatt is extremely sad, the work done by him from the state formation movement to the field of public service will always remain unforgettable.
