After the Dharali-disaster, a temporary lake has been formed on Bhagirathi river in Harshil area of Uttarkashi district in Uttarakhand which may pose a threat to low-lying areas, experts said on Tuesday.

As the Bhagirarthi river is in spate, efforts are on to open the lake by the specialized teams of Uttarakhand Jal Vidyut Nigam (UJVN) and the state Irrigation Department. Personnel of SDRF are also involved in the process.

District Magistrate Uttarakashi Prashant Arya who is camping in Dharali Harshil since the Aug 5 disaster is closely monitoring the situation around the lake.

The personnel of SDRF are trying to remove all the trees and boulders which have posed hindrance in the flow of Bhagirathi.

“Today, the District Magistrate himself got involved in helping the personnel trying to manually remove the blockades in the river,” an official statement said.  “It is worth noting that efforts to open the lake formed on the Harshil helipad in a controlled manner are continuing,” the statement said.
