The Uttarakhand police on Thursday claimed to have solved the mystery behind the murder of a woman whose body was found in a sack in Dehradun recently by arresting her first husband.

The body of Rupa, a resident of Bihar, was found in the Premnagar area in Dehradun about eight days ago.

The police arrested Ranjit Sharma (32), a native of the Saharsa district in Bihar, who murdered his first wife Rupa following a marital dispute.  Sharma was working as a daily wager in Premnagar area for the past 12 years.

In an effort to solve this blind murder, the police verified the details of over 5,000 families across more than 30 slums and shanty settlements within a six-kilometer radius of the crime scene, ultimately leading them to the accused, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Dehradun Pramendra Singh Dobal said.

The initial investigations revealed that the body of the woman aged 30-32 was dumped in Premnagar jungles after the murder. Due to the advanced state of decomposition of the body and the disfigurement of her face, the woman could not be immediately identified.

The post-mortem examination, conducted by a panel of doctors, revealed that the cause of the woman’s death was strangulation.

The SSP said based on the deceased woman’s attire, the verification drive conducted across the slum areas in Premnagar revealed that a woman who had been living since February as the wife of Ranjit Sharma was missing for several days.

During rigorous interrogation, Sharma confessed that Rupa was his first wife, who had left him four years earlier to marry another man. Subsequently, Sharma married Sushila, who was residing in his native village in Bihar. However, in February, Rupa left her second husband and, along with her 11-month-old child, came to Dehradun to live with Sharma, where she began pressuring him to leave his second wife.

On March 8, Sharma to strangle Rupa to death. To conceal the crime, he stuffed her body into a sack and dumped it near the Bala Sundari Temple.
