The talks between the Uttarakhand government and a group of teachers’ and various other government departments’ associations remained deadlocked in the wake of a strike threat from Feb 25 on their demand of the arrest of ruling BJP MLA Umesh Sharma Kau.
A joint front of several government employees’ from different departments is insisting on the arrest of Kau, an MLA from Raipur constituency in Dehradun district, in connection with the assault on Director of Elementary Education Ajay Naudiyal. They have also demanded standard operating procedure (SOP) in offices and adequate security for them.
Buckling under the pressure, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Monday directed the Chief Secretary Anand Bardhan to prepare SOPs for the safety of all government employees and asked Director General of Police (DGP) Deepam Seth to ensure adequate security arrangements in government offices.
Meanwhile, police arrested four persons, including a history-sheeter, involved in the vandalism and assault at the Directorate of Elementary Education on Saturday.
On the other hand, a group of leaders affiliated to various associations of teachers met Chief Minister Dhami on Monday to discuss the issue. However, the talks remained inconclusive, officials said.
Meanwhile, as per the front’s previously announced program, teachers, except for the Board of School Education headquarters in Ramnagar, abstained from work at many places in the state demanding arrest of Kau.
