Former BJP MLA Suresh Rathore was on Saturday expelled from the ruling party for six years for allegedly marrying second time without divorcing the first wife in the complete contravention of the Uttarakhand Civil Code (UCC) which was implemented on Jan 27 this year.

Rathore, a former BJP MLA from Jawalapur in Haridwar district, was served notice last week after he publicly introduced his alleged second wife Urmila Sanwar, an actress, but later described the story as totally filmy. He said he widely shared images of what appeared to be his wedding were actually scenes from a film he is producing starring Urmila Sanwar.

After getting the reply from Rathore, the state party general secretary Rajendra Bisht however said that the party was not satisfied with it and hence the former MLA is being expelled for six years.  “He (Rathore) has been found continuously violating the BJP’s maryada (code of conduct) and social norms,” said the state BJP media in-charge Manvir Singh Chauhan.

Early this month, Rathore had held a press conference in Saharanpur and declared that “Urmila’s love has won” and described her as part of his family. The video of this press conference had gone immediately viral. Urmila too updated her social media profile to “Urmila Suresh Rathore” after the Saharanpur press conference.
As the BJP came under fire on the issue, Rathore backtracked. “There is no certificate, no vermillion, no garland. The visuals of the marriage are from “Bhabhi Ji Vidhayak Hain,” a film I am producing,” Rathore told a leading newspaper.

Sanwar continued to maintain that she married Rathore in Nepal last year. The controversy arose when Rathore presented himself a religious leader of Dalits and introduced Urmila as his disciple. Shortly after, she alleged that she was Rathore’s wife. Rathore later filed a complaint of blackmail and Urmila hit back with allegations of assault. Later, Rathore claimed that the entire controversy had been resolved and introduced Urmila as his alleged second wife prompting BJP to expel him for six years.
