Vinod Ratur, who is spearheading an agitation on making Gairsain as full-fledged capital of Uttarakhand, on Friday announced that a march will be held on May 31 in Dehradun on the issue.
A public awareness march will be organized on Friday, May 31, 2026, commencing at 8:00 AM from in Dehradun. This march will traverse the city’s main thoroughfares, engaging the people and rallying support for making Gairsain as the permanent capital, Raturi told a press conference.
Raturi lamented that even 25 years after the creation of the state, Gairsain has not been accorded the status of a full-fledged capital. He alleged that the government tried to mislead innocent people by according summer capital status to Gairsain.
Raturi said contrary to the sacrifices made by statehood activists and the sentiments of the public, successive governments continue to commit an injustice against Gairsain.
He alleged that Dehradun is currently dominated by land mafias, mining mafias, and rampant crime. “Atrocities against women are on the rise. In the name of serving as the capital, Dehradun is being ruined,” he said.
He claimed that the historic heritage land associated with George Everest was handed over to private entities on a lease worth a mere ₹1 crore.
He also alleged that successive governments failed to take positive steps on key issues like the development of the hill regions, migration and unemployment.
